How to create a virtual gyroscope sensor in any android device and play 360 videos


Hello there, today we are going to do some trick to enable 360 video capabilities as well as VR based application compatibles on any Android Device. Normally for VR applications and to play 360 videos or photos, smartphones consists with a special sensor called gyroscope. This sensor basically calculate 3 axis based movement of the mobile phone. 


Do all phones have Gyroscope?


Unfortunately the answer is NO. In order to reduce the manufacturing cost most of the budget and mid range devices does not have gyroscope. Most of the people also do not pay much attention on sensors.Gyroscope has came to the discussion after releasing the 360 photography and some games like pokemon go and google cardboard. Now it has become one of the most trending technology in smartphone world. Also some Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Meizu have started to add gyro sensor for their budget android devices.

How to run VR based apps in smartphones which do not have gyro sensor


Fortunately now we have a very successful way to play 360 videos and run VR based apps using some tricks of android. We call this as a  "Virtual Gyroscope" . As name implies in this trick we use some firmware to create a Virtual or Software based gyroscope using Accelerometer and Compass. Most of the smartphones has a accelerometer sensor for rotate the screen and a digital compass too. So it is very easy to implement a virtual gyroscope using these two sensors.


How to make a Virtual Gyroscope in any Android Device


Well, in order to do that you have to have following compatibilities in your device,


  • Root access
  • TWRP recovery Installed
  • Xposed Framework Installed

How to root your Android device

If you are using a Samsung  device , you can read our rooting tutorial from here.
NOTE: Rooting will void your phone's warranty. Do at your own risk.

If not, you can go to this website and search for your device  . It will guide you on rooting process.

Also you an download TWRP app from playstore and install TWRP recovery.

Then you an download Xposed framework from here and install it manually.


Then download gyro firmware from here. Copy it to your phone's storage.

Then restart your device to recovery mode.(hold relevant keys while restarting)

Then go to install > Storage and select the gyro firmware zip file and install it.

Then restart your device.

Now go to the YouTube and play a 360 video . If it plays in AR mode. You have correctly configured your Virtual Gyroscope.
